Shadow and the Star

The Shadow and the Star - Laura Kinsale Wow! This book reminded me of one of those movies you see at the theater that is so intense, that when it ends, the whole audience just sits there, unmoving....silent and almost stunned. Kinsale is a talented story teller and her books are not formulaic romance novels. But I still have mixed feeling about this book.It was dark, touching, frustrating, confusing, realistic, silly. (I could go on).I loved the hero, Samuel, and I think the author did a good job portraying some authentic feelings one experiences being an abuse victim. The heroine, Leda...hmm. She drove me nuts. The whole propriety thing was taken too far (IMO). Perhaps being influenced and sheltered by old women for most of her life could explain some of it away but it became uncomfortable. I don't feel like I got to know who she was behind that mask of formalities. And yes, If I read "Dear Sir" one more time I was going to scream. As a whole, the book was very good and I would recommend it and other Kinsales to anyone looking for a book that's intelligent and a bit beyond the standard in this genre.
